After all, they come from the blue-collar, working-men city of Birmingham. But slowly but surely, Aston Villa is making progress, leaving behind mediocrity and looking proudly at the upper echelon f the Premier League table.
The new phase of Villa started in 2018, as Arab billionaire Nassef Sawiris bought majority stakes in the club. By mid-2019, the club was promoted back to the Premier League and wasted little time from there on. Reports started floating almost at the beginning on the 2021-22 season, and on a November day, it was announced that ex-Liverpool superstar, Steven Gerrard, fresh of Glasgow Rangers' glory, was appointed Villa manager. Gerrard than went out and rescued ex Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona's misery. Wait, a midfielder-magic from Barca to Aston Villa? Yep. And at the summer transfer window of the 2022-23 season, Villa made Coutinho's move permanent.
Gerrard didn't stop there. In addition, his summer spree included: Boubacar Kamara (Marseille), Diego Carlos (Sevilla), Robin Olsen (Roma), Rory Wilson (Rangers) and Ludwig Augustinsson (Sevilla), as he is looking to reshape his Villa side.
But this is Villa we are talking about. Gerrard lasted about a year, to be replace by Spain's Unai Emeri.
Aston Villa FC (known as Villa, the Villa, the Villans and The Lions) are one of the oldest and most distinguished clubs in English football. It is one of only three Clubs to have the distinction of being in at the foundation of both the Football League and the Premier League – the other two being Blackburn Rovers and Everton.
The list of their successes is notable. Having won the European Cup in 1981-82, they are one of only five English clubs to win the foremost European club competition – now the UEFA Champions League. Their “deadly rivals” are the other local side, Birmingham City and what has been known as the Second City derby has been played since 1879 – although this contest is currently in suspension as the two clubs are in different leagues. The club colors are claret shirts with sky blue sleeves, white shorts and sky-blue socks. Traditionally their badge was a rampant gold lion on a light blue background with the Club motto “Prepared” underneath. Among their celebrity supporters are Prince William and violinist Nigel Kennedy.
